As time passes the doors become older so you need to install a new door into the doorway. You should install the new one within a specific time if the door is damaged or worn out. There is a need to install a prehung door after removing the existing jambs and casing. You can keep the doorway and replace the door hardware. Especially, if it is square or if it is difficult to replace the current trim. You shouldn’t have much trouble fitting a door that fits unless your home is quite ancient.  There is no doubt, replacing an existing door with a new one is about as simple as it sounds. For this, you can use the old door as a template to cut the new door to size and install hinges, door stoppers & locks.

Also, you will need to cut mortises in the jambs to hang the door. So you can apply to stop moulding if you opt to add a door.

You might be able to treat an opening that has just been completed with drywall. Check to see if the opening is square and if the rough hole was framed. This is framed in a standard dimension and 1/2-inch drywall was used. Moreover, you can attach the door frame right up to the hole in the drywall. Otherwise, you’ll need to make room for shims by removing the corner bead. Along with corner beads remove the drywall from the jamb and header faces.

Using a sharp chisel, complete the mortises and shims to hold the door in the aperture. Drill a 1-inch hole for the bolt with a spade bit. After this, use a chisel to mortise the striking plate into the jamb.

Few Tricks for Installing the New Door

  1. Old Doors Can Be Restored

You need to replace a few doors on the main floor with off-the-shelf, and 6-panel doors over the years. Some individuals have the majority of the doors downstairs from a 20-30-year-old renovation. They look are ugly, boring, and of poor quality.

The best and most interesting reclaimed doors may have broken or painted-over hardware. Some damage to the wood from years of use, or unusual boreholes for the door knobs. Whether the doors were in your home when you bought them from an ironmongery antique store. They can sometimes be restored to their former glory.

As you can see, the area near the latch on the end was pretty rough. So, the mortise-style lock set would be difficult to repair or replace. A small crack can also be seen in the closest panel. Now it’s time to get to work.

  1. Remove the Previous Hardware

In order to restore this old door, we must first remove the old lockset. This one was relatively simple to remove, the layers of paint, and wrestle a couple of stripped screws out. Furthermore, it’s OK to pry some of the stripped screws out like a nail.

  1. Remove the Most Severely Damaged Areas

In this suggestion, identify and mark the damaged area that needs to be removed. Moreover, the key to this step is to keep the edges parallel and square. This will make creating our patch easier later and remove the damaged area with an oscillating saw.

  1. Drilling Holes

You can use a door lock installation jig to save time and ensure accuracy that is a great idea here. If you want to ensure, read the instructions that came with your new knobs. Moreover, if your door already meets the required specifications, then proceed to the next step.

You should check the fit and function of your new holes after they have been drilled. Check that the latch aligns with where our repaired edge will be when we’re finished.

  1. Create a Patch

While creating a patch you need to measure and cut our wood patch. The disadvantage of pine is that it is soft and easily damaged. But with a patch, this small and quality paint covers it. You need to drill the edge bore and chisel the recess for the faceplate at this point.

Return to your door, fine-tune, and fit the patch into place with a chisel and sandpaper. In addition, when you’re satisfied with the fit, use wood glue to secure the patch in place. You should add a couple of finishing nails to keep from cracking your patch, and pre-drill the nail holes.

  1. Sand and Fill

We can now complete the fit by filling in all the gaps around your patch with wood filler. This is a good time to fill any other gaps, screw holes, or cracks on the door. Sand down any high spots around your patch as well as any rough spots on the door.

Now you need to apply a coat of primer to the repaired areas and a fresh coat of paint. You need to install your new knob set, faceplate, and strike plate completely after the paint has dried. You can also use this method in order to update the hinges. Simply cut out the damaged area and repair it with wood and wood filler.
